Reading Comprehension
The way people hold to the belief that a fun-filled, painfree life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain. As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the sources of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment (承担的义务), self
improvement. Ask a bachelor(单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features. Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couple who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild. Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
36. According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because_____. A.he is reluctant to take on family responsibilities
B.he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single C.he finds more fun in dating than in marriage

It’s very interesting to note where the debate about diversity (多样化) is taking place. It is taking place primarily in political circles. Here at the College Fund, we have a lot of contact with top corporate (公司的) leaders;none of them is talking about getting rid of those instruments that produce diversity. In fact, they say that if their companies are to compete in the global village and in the global market place, diversity is an imperative. They also say that the need for talented, skilled Americans means we have to expand the pool of potential employees. And in looking at where birth rates are growing and at where the population is shifting, corporate America understands that expanding the pool means promoting policies that help provide skills to more minorities, more women and more immigrants. Corporate leaders know that if that doesn’t occur in our society, they will not have the engineers, the scientists, the lawyers, or the business managers they will need. Likewise, I don’t hear people in the academy saying. “Let’s go backward. Let’s go back to the good old days, when we had a meritocracy (不拘一格降人才)” (which was never true—we never had a
meritocracy, although we’ve come closer to it in the last 30 years). I recently visited a great little college in New York here the campus has doubled its minority population in the last six years. I talked with an African American who has been a professor there for a long time, and she remembers that when she first joined the community, there were fewer than a handful of minorities on campus. Now, all of us feel the u-niversity is better because of the diversity. So where we hear this debate is primarily in political circles and in the media—not in corporate board rooms or on college campuses.

Psychologist George Spilich and colleagues at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, decided to find out whether, as many smokers say, smoking helps them to “think and concentrate.” Spilich put young non-smokers, active smokers and smokers deprived (被剥夺) of cigarettes through a series of tests. In the first test, each subject (试验对象) sat before a computer screen and pressed a key as soon as he or she recognized a target letter among a grouping of 96. In this simple test, smokers, deprived smokers and nonsmokers performed equally well. The next test was more complex, requiring all to scan sequences of 20 identical letters and respond the instant one of the letters transformed into a different one. Non-smokers were faster, but under the stimulation of nicotine (尼古丁), active smokers were faster than deprived smokers. In the third test of short-term memory, non-smokers made the fewest errors, but deprived smokers committed fewer errors than active smokers. The fourth test required people to read a passage, then answer questions about it.
Non-smokers remembered 19 percent more of the most important information than active smokers, and deprived smokers bested those who had smoked a cigarette just before testing. Active smokers tended not only to have poorer memories but also had trouble separating important information from insignificant details. “As our tests became more complex.” Sums up Spilich, “non-smokers performed better than smokers by wider and wider margins,” He predicts, “smokers might perform adequately at many jobs until they got complicated. A smoking airline pilot could fly adequately if no problems arose, but if something went wrong, smoking might damage his mental capacity.”

There is no denying that students should learn something about how computers work, just as we expect them at least to understand that the internal combustion engine (内燃机) has something to do with burning fuel, expanding gases and pistons (活塞) being driven. For people should have some basic idea of how the things that they use do what they do. Further, students might be helped by a course that considers the computer’s impact on society. But that is not what is meant by computer literacy. For computer literacy is not a form of literacy(读写能力);it is a trade skill that should not be taught as a liberal art. Learning how to use a computer and learning how to program one are two distinct activities. A case might be made that the competent citizens of tomorrow should free themselves from their fear of computers. But this is quite different from saying that all ought to know how to program one. Leave that to people who have chosen programming as a career. While programming can be lots of fun, and while our society needs some people who are experts at it, the same is true of auto repair and violin-making. Learning how to
use a computer is not that difficult, and it gets easier all the time as programs become more “user-friendly”. Let us assume that in the future everyone is going to have to know how to use a computer to be a competent citizen. What does the phrase “learning to use a computer” mean? It sounds like “learning to drive a car”, that is, it sounds as if there is some set of definite skills that, once acquired, enable one to use a computer. In fact, “learning to use a computer” is much more like “learning to play a game”, but learning the rules of one game may not help you play a second game, whose rules may not be the same. There is no such a thing as teaching someone how to use a computer. One can only teach people to use this or that program and generally that is easily accomplished.
54. To be the competent citizens of tomorrow, people should_____. A.try to lay a solid foundation in computer science
B.be aware of how the things that they use do what they do C.learn to use a computer by acquiring a certain set of skills
D.understand that programming a computer is more essential than repairing a car
55. In the second paragraph “violin-making” is mentioned to show that____. A.programming a computer is as interesting as making a violin B.our society needs experts in different fields
C.violin making requires as much skill as computer programming
D.people who can use a computer don’t necessarily have to know computer programming
56. Learning to use a computer is getting easier all the time because_____. A.programs are becoming less complicated
B.programs are designed to be convenient to users C.programming is becoming easier and easier
D.programs are becoming readily available to computer users
57. According to the author, the phrase “learning to use a computer”(Lines 3,4,Para.3) means learning_____.
A.a set of rules
B.the fundamentals of computer science C.specific programs
D.general principles of programming
58. The author’s purpose in writing this passage is_____. A.to stress the impact of the computer on society B.to explain the concept of computer literacy
C.to illustrate the requirements for being competent citizens of tomorrow
D.to emphasize that computer programming is an interesting and challenging job
59. According to the author, which following sentence is NOT true? A.Learn to use the use computer covers many kinds of skills. B.Computer literacy is not so easy to learn. C.Programming is more than just a kind of fun.
D.Learning to play a game is always more than learning to use a computer.
There is no question that the old style of air pollution could kill people. In one week following the infamous “peasouper” fog in December 1952, 4,700 people died in London. Most of these people were elderly and already had heart or lung diseases. A series of these killer fogs eventually led to the British Passing the Clean Air Act which restricted the burning of coal. Fortunately the effect of smog on the lungs is not so dramatic. Scientists have now conducted a number of laboratory experiments in which volunteers are exposed to ozone inside a steel chamber for a few hours. Even at quite low concentrations there is a reversible fall in lung function, an increase in the irritability of the lungs and evidence of airway inflammation (发炎). Although irritable and inflamed lungs are particularly seen in people with asthma (哮喘)and other lung diseases, these effects of ozone also occur in healthy subjects.
Similar changes are also seen after exposure to nitrogen dioxide, although there is some disagreement about the concentration at which they occur. Other studies have found that people living in areas with high levels of pollution have more symptoms and worse hung function than those living in areas with clean air. Groups of children attending school camps show falls in lung function even at quite low concentrations of ozone. There is also a relationship between ozone levels and hospital admissions for asthma, both in North America and Australia. It is suspected that long-term exposure to smog may result in chronic bronchitis(支气管炎)and emphysema(肺气 肿), but this has yet to be proven. Recently an association has been found between the levels of particles in the air and death rates in North American cities. The reason for this association is not understood and as yet there is no evidence this occurs in Australia However, we do know that hazy days are associated with more asthma attacks in children.
60. Which of the following is NOT the result of laboratory experiments? A.Low concentrations B.Fall in lung function C.Irritability of the lungs D.Airway inflammation
61. Irritable and inflamed lungs are also seen in people with_____. A.asthma
B.lung diseases C.good health D.weak health
解析:从原文第二段的“Although irritable and inflamed lungs are particularly seen in people with asthma(哮喘)and other lung diseases, these effects of ozone also occur in healthy subjects.”
62. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a possible cause of lung diseases?
A.The burning of coal
B.Long-term exposure to smog C.Exposure to nitrogen dioxide D.Attending school camps
根据文中的“Groups of children attending school camps show falls in lung function even at quite low concentrations of ozone.”可知,这里有助于分析文章的信息来自“even at quite low concentrations of ozone”,而非“Groups of children attending school camps”,即“Groups of children attending school camps”并无实际作用。
63. The relationship between exposure to____has not yet been determined. A.ozone and fall in lung function
B.ozone and lung diseases such as asthma C.nitrogen dioxide and worse lung function D.smog and chronic bronchitis and emphysema
正确答案:D 解析:根据文中的“It is suspected that long-term exposure to smog may result in chronic bronchitis(支气管炎)and emphysema(肺气肿),but this has yet to be proven”可知,这些疾病和烟雾之间的关联还有待验证,因此选项D正确。
64. The association between_____has not yet been found in Australia. A.ozone levels and hospital admissions for asthma B.hazy days and more asthma attacks in children C.the levels of particles in the air and death rates D.high levels of pollution and more symptoms
正确答案:C 解析:根据文中的“Recently an association has been found between the levels of particles in the airand death rates in North American cities. The reason for this association is not understood and as yetthere is no evidence this occurs in Australia.(最近发现北美空气中微粒的浓度与死亡率之间存在联系,但是原因尚不知晓,而且在澳大利亚并未发现此类现象)”可知,C项是正确答案。
65. In the last sentence of third paragraph, the word “suspected” can be best replaced by____.
A.doubtful B.supposed C.suspicious D.said
Francois Jacob wrote that “an age or culture is characterized less by the extent of its knowledge than by the nature of the questions it puts forward. “ 66 .
Admittedly, the most brilliant cultures are developed during the days of knowledge acquirement. 67. Many convincing examples can be given when looking back to the cultural development of these coun-tries. The most influential Chinese culture flourished during Tang Dynasty, which was established a thou-sand years ago. This influence can be traced by the word “Tang Street”, another name for Chinatown. And it was during the same time that the Chinese acquired more knowledge than they had before. 68 . However, when compared with the knowledge people have acquired and are acquiring today, the knowledge of the ancient Tangs and Arabs is unquestionably limited. But in all history books, the cultures of the Tang Dynasty and the ancient Arab are introduced in detail, while the cultures of the People’s Republic of China and the Arab League are seldom mentioned. 69 . For instance, the ancient Greeks and Romans’ knowledge about nature was definitely insufficient, but they are still recognized as the founders of the most magnificent ages and cultures in human history because the questions put forward and thought about by them were profound and meaningful. In the works of the Greeks and Romans represented by The Iliad, The Odyssey and The Aeneid, the questions concerning life and death, love and hatred, benevolence and malevolence and individual and society are raised. People can always draw inspirations from Achilles’s different attitudes towards death in the Iliad and the Odyssey and Aeneas’ s choice from love and glory. 70. The importance of an era or civilization can never be diminished because of its lack of knowledge. The essence of an age or culture should be the exploration in the spiritual world and the thoughtful questions posed.A. The Arabian culture thrived when the Arabians learnt the application of arithmetic and created Arabic numbers.B. These remain the questions people face, contemplate and discuss till today.C. In general, cultures are developed during the time of knowledge acquirement.D. This statement reveals that the nature of an epoch or civilization is decided by the things that are thought about, rather than the things that are already known.E. This is probably a universal truth for all countries and nations that boast impressive histories.F. Compared with knowledge, the questions put forward are more significant in an age or culture.

Over the past two decades, the lives of American women have undergone unparalleled change. The Virginia Slims Opinion Poll has chronicled that change in national surveys conducted six times since 1970. 71 One of the most striking findings of the 1990 Virginia Slims Opinion Poll is the degree of consensus— rather than conflict—in women’s and men’s attitudes about the changing roles of women. In many respects, the two sexes agree. Men express strong and consistent support for women’s improved status in society. 72 And they agree that the most tangible way in which they could help women balance jobs and family is to take on more household work. But men are also a major cause of resentment and stress for American women. 73 Now, a generation of sweeping change later, women’s expectations have outpaced the change in men’s behavior. Token help with the dishes or the children no longer inspires women’s gratitude. 74 . Increasingly, the kitchen table has become that bargaining table. 75 Next to money, “how much my mate helps around the house “is the single biggest cause of resentment among women who are married or living as if married, with 52 percent citing this as a problem. Improvement in this area is one of the top things women cite when they consider what would make their lives better.A. There is evidence in the poll that waiting for men to live up to the ideal of equal responsibility is a major irritant for most women today.B. Together, these surveys provide a comprehensive picture of women’s changing status, and of their views of the future.C. In 1970, most women were concerned about getting men to share household chores.D. They, like women, believe that sex discrimination remains an important problem in the workplace.E. Over the past three generations, expectations of men as rulers and protectors of the household have changed.F. Instead, as women contribute more to the family income, they expect in return a more equal division of the household responsibilities.

76. One might ask why speculation is permitted when there is so real a danger of loss. The basic reason is that speculation can perform useful functions in the market equilibrium and encourages faster entry of more suppliers. If the price change lagged until after an actual commodity shortage had occurred, the fluctuation would probably be sharper and more sudden. Remedial supply action could not be further delayed. Similarly, if speculators foresee a surplus in some commodity, their selling of futures will help drive the price down to some extent before the surplus actually occurs. When speculators foresee a shortage and bid up the price, they are also helping to conserve the present supply. As the price goes up, less of the commodity is purchased; a rise in price encourages users to economize. Similarly, a lowering of price encourages users to buy more, thus helping to sell the surplus which is developing.

77. Write an essay in no less than 250 words with the title”My Understanding of Globalization”. Your essay should be written on the Answer Sheet.
My Understanding of Globalization In recent years there is widespread awareness of the hot term “globalization”. Different people hold different opinions on it. Some believe that it increases inequality within and between nations, threatens employment and living standards and thwarts social progress. Others view it as a process that is beneficial and also inevitable and irreversible. As far as I am concerned, globalization is much like fire. It is improper to say that fire is completely good or bad. If we use it properly, it can help us cook food, sterilize equipment, form iron, and heat our homes. If not, fire can ruin lives, towns and forests in an instant. People welcoming globalization think that it will bring them great profits. They claim that trade obstacles will be broken with the globalization, which will fetch them more benefits and conveniences, such as buying foreign products with less money, traveling all over the world more freely than ever. People who object it think that the disappearance of national borders and the establishment of a world interconnected by markets will deal a death blow to regional and national cultures. National identity or soul will lose for the invasion of cultural products from North America is so powerful that most of countries are incapable of resisting. After the advantages and disadvantages of globalization were carefully compared, the conclusion was obvious. Neither cheerleaders who are blind to the destruction globalization can cause nor strident opponents who are blind to the way globalization gives some people their first opportunity to fulfill basic aspirations are good. We should see globalization as something to mold, shape and manage for the betterment of everyone.
