Many students feel it difficult to remember new words when they begin to study English. Now I will give you some advice.
Do not waste time in learning a list of English words. It is the hardest way to remember English words. How do you learn to speak Chinese? You did it by listening carefully to the people talking to each other. You can find radio programs, TV programs and records, and listen to them carefully. The best way to learn all new words is through ear. As you listen to more and more dialogues, you will learn how English is pronounced in phrases and sentences. Of course, it is not enough to learn new words; you must learn how words are put together, and why some words in English are emphasized (强调).
Some people have found that they can learn the names of everyday objects, such as box, cup, desk, and so on, in the following way. They write the names of these objects on paper and put the paper on them. Try this and see if this way works for you. If it does not, then go on to practice your dialogues. 54. Maybe the passage is from .
A. an English teacher B. a doctor from England C. an excellent student D. the kind parents
55. The writer wrote this passage to give us some advice about .
A. how to remember the spelling of the words B. how to learn new words

Mars (火星) is the fourth planet from the sun. It is 141 million miles away from the
5
sun. It has two moons. A year on Mars is 687 earth-days long.
Mars is about half the size of Earth. Because Mars is smaller than Earth, its gravity (重力) is also less. If you weighed 100 pounds on Earth, you’d weigh only about 38 pounds on Mars.
Mars’ surface looks like a red desert. There are mountains, canyons (峡谷), and craters (火山坑). There are no rivers or oceans. It is a planet without any liquid (液态) water. It was named by the ancient Romans for their God of War. It is very cold on Mars. Mars is much colder than our planet. The temperature on Mars is 80 degrees below zero! That is a lot colder than the North Pole!
Scientists suggest that Mars once had rivers, lakes, and maybe even an ocean. Mars has mountains that are much higher than those on Earth. Mars also has bigger, deeper canyons than Earth’s. Some of these are sixty miles long and five or six miles deep. No people could live there. But it’s fun to learn about this red planet. Don’t you think so? 58. Mars is the planet from the sun.
A. third B. fourth C. fifth D. sixth 59. Mars is .
A. the largest planet B. one-fifth of the Earth C. about half the size of Earth D. about the same size as Earth 60. Mars was named after .
A. the fire B. a red desert
C. the color of its surface D. the God of War 61. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. Mars never had rivers or lakes. B. Mars is much colder than Earth.
C. A man can lift heavier things on Mars than on Earth.
D. Living on Mars for one year means that a person lives for 687 days on Earth.
D
Warm weather and sunny days mean it’s a barbecue (烧烤) season in the US. These days, when people say they’re going to a barbecue, they usually mean that they’re going to cook the food over a grill (烤架) outdoors. Popular barbecue foods include hamburgers, hot dogs, and vegetables.
Barbecue fans say that this is not real barbecue; it’s just grilling. True barbecue – also called BBQ – is an American tradition (传统) that is as old as the country itself. Barbecue refers to meat that is cooked for a very long time (sometimes as long as 24 hours) over low heat from a wood fire. The smell of the burning wood adds flavor to the meat, which becomes soft as it cooks.
Different parts of the US have different ways of making barbecue. In Texas, people often use beef. In North and South Carolina, pork is the most common. In Kansas City, pork ribs (猪肋排) are the favorite. Each region (地区) says that its own barbecue is the best. There are barbecue competitions every year, and even magazines about the art of making great barbecue.
Most Americans don’t have the time or patience to dig a hole, fill it with special wood, light a fire and then cook meat carefully over it all day and night. So when they want a real barbecue, they go to restaurants that do the hard work for them. For those
6
who want to have their own, easy barbecues, there’s always grilling. 62. Popular barbecue foods include _________.
A. hot dogs, vegetables and hamburgers B. beef, hot dogs and vegetables C. vegetables, hamburgers and pork D. hamburgers, pork ribs and hot dogs 63. What does the underlined word “flavor” mean?
A. 色泽 B. 新鲜 C. 味道 D. 热度 64. Nowadays most Americans have a real barbecue __________.
A. at home B. in the restaurants C. outdoors D. in different parts 65. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. Barbecue is an American tradition. B. How to grill foods.
C. The differences between barbecue and grilling. D. Barbecue culture in the US. V. 口语应用。(每小题1分,共5分)

Have you duanged today? The character (字) “duang” is so new that it is not even in the Chinese dictionary. But it has already spread like wildfire online in China, appearing more than 8 million times on China’s micro-blog site Weibo. On China’s biggest online search engine Baidu, it has been looked up almost 600,000 times. It’s been noticed in the West, too.
Everyone is duanging. But what does it mean? “Duang” seems to be an example of
7
onomatopoeia (拟声词). It seems to have started with Hong Kong movie star Jackie Chan in 2004 in an ad. The word was used again recently after Chan posted it on his Weibo page. Thousands of users then began to flood Chan’s Weibo page.
The word appears to have many different meanings, and there’s no perfect translation, but you could use it as an adjective (形容词) to emphasize the word that follows it. A cat might be “duang cute”, for example. Or you might be “very duang nervous”. 71. Can you find “duang” in the Chinese dictionary? 72. How many times has “duang” been looked up on Baidu? 73. Where did Jackie Chan first use “duang” ? 74. How could we use “duang” ?
