In order to help discover spoilage and reduce food waste for supermarkets and consumers, researchers have developed new low-cost, smart phone-linked, eco-friendly spoilage sensors for meat and fish packaging.

One in threeUKconsumers throw away food just because it reaches the use-by date, but 60% of the £12.5 billion-worth of food we throw away each year is safe to eat.

The researchers, whose findings were published in ACS Sensors, say the sensors could also eventually replace the use-by date—a widely used indicator of being fresh and eatable.

The sensors cost two US cents each to make. Known as “paper-based electrical gas sensors (PEGS)”, they detect spoilage gases like ammonia (a poisonous gas with a strong unpleasant smell) in meat and fish products. The information provided by the electronic nose is received by a smart phone, and then you can know whether the food is fresh and safe to eat.

The Imperial College London researchers who developed PEGS made the sensors by printing carbon electrodes onto a special type of paper. The materials are eco-friendly and harmless, so they don’t damage the environment and are safe to use in food packaging. The sensors, combined with a tiny electronic system, then inform nearby mobile devices, which identify and understand the data about spoilage gases.

Lead author Dr Firat Guder of Imperial’s Department of Bioengineering, said, “Although they’re designed to keep us safe, use-by dates can lead to eatable food being thrown away. They don’t always reflect its actual freshness. In fact, people often get sick from food-borne diseases due to poor storage, even when an item is within its use-by date.”

“These sensors are cheap enough so we hope to see supermarkets using them within three years. Our goal is to use PEGS in food packaging to reduce unnecessary food waste.”

The authors hope that PEGS could have applications beyond food processing, like sensing chemicals in agriculture, air quality, and detecting disease markers in breath like those involved in kidney disease.

4. What is the function of PEGS according to the text?

A. To improve the taste of foods. B. To improve the service of stores. C. To help supermarkets store foods. D. To help people test food freshness. 5. What role does the smartphone play while PEGS are functioning? A. It acts as an electronic nose. B. It reads the data collected by PEGS. C. It helps print the gas sensors onto paper. D. It discovers the spoilage gases from foods. 6. What does Dr. Firat Guder say about use-by dates? A. They are not completely reliable. B. They can help reduce food waste. C. They are based on scientific research. D. They are not accepted by the consumers.

7. What does the author mainly talk about in the text? A. The process of researching spoilage sensors. B. A new technology in packaging to reduce food waste. C. The application of spoilage sensors beyond food processing. D. The influence of use-by dates on supermarkets and consumers.

C

This past year, I've found myself returning again and again to lines of poetry by Emily Dickinson. Like many people, I've needed the curing effects of reading more than ever. As scientists and psychologists will tell you, books are good for the brain and their benefits are particularly vital now.

Books expand our world, providing an escape and offering novelty, surprise and excitement. They broaden our view and help us connect with others. Books can also distract us and help reduce ourmental chatter. When we hit the “flow state\" of reading where we're fully lost in a book, our brain's mode network calms down. It's a network of brain that is active and gets absorbed in thinking and worrying endlessly when we are not doing anything else.

There is so much noise in the world right now and the very act of reading is kind of meditation. You disconnect from the chaos around you.You reconnect with yourself when you are reading. And there's no more noise.

In 2020, the NPD Group recorded the best year of book sales since 2004. Yet even as people are buying more books, many are reporting they're having a harder time getting through them. It's difficult for your brain to focus on a book when it's constantly scanning for threats to keep you alive. Our fight-or-flight response has been consistently activated.

Sometimes I picture my brain as a cartoon brain with little arms and legs, fighting with a book I am holding and screaming: “Can't you see I'm busy!” Anxiety causes our brain to produce a flood of stress, which consumes our energy and makes it harder to concentrate.

Then one day in December sitting on my couch, I remembered how much I like to read\"The House of Mirth\" every few years around the holidays. The memory inspired me to pick up the familiar book, opened it up and started reading.I just kept going. The comfort and distraction and brain-opening experience gave me peace. So return to something familiar.

8. What does the underlined part “mental chatter” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Getting lost in a book. B. Non-stop inner anxiety. C. Chatting with the author. D. Powerful network of brain.

9. What do we know about reading according to the text? A. It can treat our headache. B. It can calm down the noisy people. C. It forces us to concentrate.on thinking. D. It makes us communicate with ourselves.

10. Why was it difficult for people to finish reading books in 2020? A. People bought too many books.

B. The books were too difficult to understand. C. People just wanted to escape from the threat. D. The life threat disturbed people's focus on books.

11. Why is the author's experience mentioned in the last paragraph? A. To rid people of concern for safety. B. To present an effective reading way. C. To wake up memories of an old book.

D. To recommend the book he/she reads.

D

One billion people in the world are short of water. How can this problem be solved. Some suggestions have been to desalinate ocean water or to build enormous water pipelines from areas where water is abundant. (Suggestions such as these prove extremely expensive when they are actually used.) One possibility that scientists are considering is pulling icebergs from either the North Pole or the South Pole to parts of the world with a water shortage. Although many questions must be answered before such a project could be tried, moving icebergs seems a reasonable possibility in the future.

Engineers, mathematicians, and glaciologists from a dozen countries have been considering the iceberg as a future source of water. Saudi Arabia is particularly interested in this project because it has a great water shortage. Scientists estimate that it would take 128 days to transport a large iceberg (about 1/2 square mile) to Saudi Arabia. Yet the iceberg would be completely melted by the 104th day. Therefore, insulation would be essential, but how to insulate the iceberg remains an unsolved problem.

The problems in transporting an iceberg are numerous. The first problem is choosing the iceberg to pull. The icebergs that form in the North Pole are quite difficult to handle because of their shape. Only a small portion extends above the water — most of the iceberg is below the surface, which would make it difficult to pull. South Pole icebergs, on the other hand, are flat and float like table tops. Thus they would be much easier to move.

How can a 200-million-ton iceberg be moved. No ship is strong enough to pull such enormous weight through the water. Perhaps several ships could be used. Attaching ropes to an iceberg this size is also an enormous problem. Engineers think that large nails or long metal rods could be driven into the ice. What would happen if the iceberg splits into several pieces during the pulling. Even if an iceberg with very few cracks were chosen, how could it be pulled through stormy waters. Furthermore, once the iceberg reached its destination, very few ports would be deep enough to store it.

All of these problems must be solved before icebergs can become a reasonable source of water. Yet scientists estimate that it will be possible to transport them in the near future. Each year, enough icebergs form to supply the whole world with fresh water for a full year. In addition, icebergs are free and nonpolluting. As a solution to the world’s water problems, icebergs may be a workable possibility. 12. What is a problem in transporting iceberg? A. The size of the iceberg. B. The colour of the iceberg.

C. The salt in the iceberg. D. The movement of air and water.

13. What is the author’ attitude towards transporting iceberg? A. Pessimistic. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Unconcerned. 14. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A. It is hard to use iceberg. B. Iceberg are a good choice.

C. There are problems with iceberg. D. Man finds no other ways to solve water shortage. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Shortage of water. B. Icebergs for water.

C. Scientists and icebergs. D. Iceberg—scientists headache. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Critical(批判的)thinking is the art of using reason to analyze ideas and dig deeper to get to our true potential. It doesn’t mean you’re thinking harder or longer.____16____Here are some tips and ideas to help you build a foundation for critical thinking.

Question your assumptions. We make a lot of assumptions about almost everything. It’s how our brain processes certain pieces of information, and how we get along in everyday life. You could say they are the foundation of our critical framework.____17____Then the whole foundation needs to be rebuilt, from the bottom up.

Don’t take information on authority until you've investigated it yourself. Instead of double-checking everything anyone says, we tend to label information as either coming from a trustworthy or not trustworthy source. This keeps us from double-checking every piece of information that comes our way, saving time and energy. But it also keeps us from getting to the bottom of things we think of as coming from a trustworthy source, even when they don’t.___18___

Put yourself in other people’s shoes. Empathy can also help you develop your critical thinking skills.____19____You may find that a little understanding facilitates a deeper insight into other people and their behavior. The deeper your insight into yourself and others, the wiser your decisions will be.

___20___There is no way to learn better than learning from your friends. If you only want to be a big fish swimming in the little pond just because your ego(自负)feels good, keep this part. If you are wondering about

how to develop critical skills, make friends with smart people and throw away your ego. A. Actually, it’s about thinking better.

B. Surround yourself with people smarter than you. C. Be someone that people know that they can count on.

D. You should not judge others until you fully understand their situation. E. But what if they turned out to be wrong, or at least not entirely truthful? F. The reason is that understanding does not always go with the right action. G. So what is published in a magazine or online doesn’t mean it’s necessarily true.
