1. ago是表示时间的副词,其基本意思是“以前”,表示事情发生在“从此刻算起若干时间以前”,也可以表示“事情发生距现在有多长时间”。简言之, ago的时间参照点是现在。
2. ago在句中一般不单独使用,须与表示时间的名词或副词搭配使用,且要放在它所修饰词的后面。
3. ago短语在句中修饰谓语动词时,该动词一般须用过去时态。但在某些固定短语或人们意识到所涉及的事情是过去发生的时刻, ago也可用于一般现在时,着重表示“到现在已有多长时间了”。当不仅表示动作发生,而且强调动作的后果时, ago可和过去完成时连用。在强调句型中,如强调ago短语,谓语动词be可用于一般现在时,也可用于一般过去时。long ago用于加强语气时,也可与现在完成时连用。
4. ago短语在句中修饰非谓语动词或者句中有情态动词时,除可与一般时连用外,也可和完成时连用。
5. 在文学作品中为了叙述生动, ago可与现在完成时连用,也可用于一般现在时,这是因为作者与读者都沉浸在故事情节之中,而把作品中的人物与现实生活融合到一起了。
6. ago短语通常在句中作状语,但有时它在句中也可作介词of的宾语、后置修饰语或表语。

1. ago所适用的时态：通常来说，ago用于过去时态，不能用于完成时态，如不能说She has seen him a week ago，只能说She saw him a week ago。ago只有在有助动词或分词、动名词或不定式的形式中才能用完成时态。有时当语气强调“早已……”时，也可用完成时态。

   She must have seen him a week ago.
   She seems to have seen him a week ago.

2. ago与before的比较：表示“早于现在多少时间前”，用ago。表示“早于过去某时多少时间前”，通常用before。不过英美人也有用ago，觉得语气比较生动。表示“早于将来某时多少时间前”，也用before。表示“早于任何某时（不是现在、过去或将来的某时）多少时间前”，仍用before。

   He started five minutes ago.

   He told me he had seen her a few minutes before.

   When you call at the shop again this afternoon, you may be told that the book has been sold only a few minutes before.

   He often forgets what he has heard only a few minutes before.

3. ago后面带从句时，可以接that 引导的从句，而不可以用since。

   He died 20years ago.(不带从句）
   It was 20 years ago that he died.(带从句)

4. 注意在as long ago as 18等表达方式中，第二个as后面没有in。通常说as long as forty years，不说as long ago as forty years；
5. 句子She died three years ago next Monday指“她在3年前的下周一去世”，而句子It happened a fortnight ago tomorrow指“这事发生在13天以前”。“刚过去的第二个晚上”常用 two evenings ago来表示。
